Farming and landscape in the Yorkshire Dales go hand in hand, and have done for at least a thousand years. But what’s the story today? What farming practices persist unchanged? Are some farmers tending to revert to less intensive farming? What new tools or approaches are affecting farming today? Voices From the Land shares the reflections of Yorkshire Dales Farmers about their day-to-day practices and their relationship to the unique landscape of fells and dales.
Between October 2016 and July 2017 stories, recordings and photographs will be added to this site as a team of volunteers, professional researchers and students meet farmers across the Yorkshire Dales National Park, and visit shows and sales. We’ll be working with the support of the Dales Countryside Museum to put today’s stories into the context of the recordings, photographs and items in the museum collection. An exhibition at the Dales Countryside Museum will showcase the work, from November 2017 – March 2018.
Voices From the Land has been supported by a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund. and the Yorkshire Dales National Park Sustainability Development Fund.
